On basic Arabic for private study in the US, you probably need to start
with
Foregin Service Institute's
Basic Saudi Arabic
I believe it comes with 10 tapes and can be ordered thru
General Services Administration, Washington, DC
or Audio-Forum, a group in Conneticut. Both places about $200.
the Saudi dialect is close to Jordanian and Sudanese Arabic and provides a
good base for whichever dialect you end up with as well as for modern
written Arabic.
If you are doing this for basic Hebrew background, I would recommend
attaining fluency in modern Hebrew before Arabic. (This advice is as a
speaker of both.)
