Another interesting point in relation to my previous posting on
Mizpeh/Mizpah and Gilead: Compare Genesis 31:47-49 which suggests a
specific Mizpeh/Mizpah in the Gilead region (31:25) which was also
called Galeed, same consonants as Gilead. Compare also Joshua 22:34.
Perhaps Gilead/Galeed was originally another name for the specific
location which became widened to the region. BDB identifies also with
Ramath Mizpah Jos. 13:26. I found a reference to an identification
with Ramoth-Gilead, but it seems that is now taken as much further
north, at Tell er Ramith.
There is apparently a Khirbet Jel`ad on the modern Jebel Jel`ad in the
correct location. Elsewhere I read of a site called Jal`ud - the same
place or another? Has there been any excavation here?
