a couple people have noted that the same software running on different
platforms behaves quite a bit differently. running on a linux machine
seems to pose serious problems, and will have to look into that. all
kinds of interesting mixes and matches, like trying to sort out the
plague in the 1300s: various strains interacting in different ways,
initially looks baffling....
but, nevertheless, thanks to all those who tried. take consolation
that difficulties may benefit others down the line.
