Hi,
Happy Friday everyone! This past week flew by...I can’t believe it’s already time for me to email about upcoming programming again.
That said, we have lots of cool things coming your way this week! Check it out:
Tonight’s Outside Track, from 9-10pm, will be Platform by Holly Herndon, which is an album of glitchy, cerebral electronic soundscapes that push the boundaries of pop and tekno as we know it…
On tonight's New Science Experience, 10pm-midnight, local mixmaster Mike D and NSE boss Beto Terwilliger will be going back2back. They'll be serving fishy diva jams, slowjam realness and disco oddities.
This week on Orange County Special, we’ll take a look at releases from local record label/nonprofit/all around cool guys and girls, the Music Makers Relief Foundation. This group specializes in preserving the livelihood and music of some truly great southern folk and blues musicians, all based in North Carolina. Tune this Sunday 11am-1pm!
Right after that, from 1-2pm on Hell or High Water, we'll be hearing from Etta Baker, Piedmont blues guitarist from Morganton, NC known for her driving, rhythmic two-finger style guitar playing. Her guitar repertoire ranges from late 19th-century parlor music to intimation of blues music styles that would define the post-World War II urban electric blues that became popular in Chicago and Detroit and gave birth to Rock ‘n Roll.
Tune in to Broken Music this Sunday at 2pm to listen to selections from a new collection of live installation recordings from the cross-continental collaborative quartet SQID (featuring Angelica Castello, Burkhard Stangl, Mario de Vega and Attilaa Faravelli). Armed with an arsenal of instruments, toys, props and other found materials, the group created hours of recordings during a 2014 pilgrimage in the Hungarian countryside and then culled the material into a series of performances all over Europe. After the concerts, the very fine Russian avant-garde label Mikroton convinced the quartet to put together this new CD of the performances' highlights.
On Sports Rap, Sunday 9-10pm, we'll be discussing the surprise rise and fall of Matthew Dellavedova, the surprise fall and rise of the Golden State Warriors, and hopefully touching on the tight race for the Stanley Cup.
And on next week’s Inside Track, Monday 9-10pm, we’ll be hearing the compilation Mindbender: Stringtronics, out on the label Fifth Dimension. Released in 1972, this was originally made for use in movies, TV shows, commercial, etc to enhance tension in dramatic scenes or make relaxed and mellow scenes more so. Featuring an array of string arrangements, Latin grooves, and at times, rock-ish vibes.
