hey everyone!
it snowed a lot this week!  i bet some of y'all liked that and some of y'all didn't, kind of similar to how some people might think a photo of a dress is white and gold, while others see it as a backstreet boys CD!  haha, ok.  if you have no idea what i'm talking about, please do not stop reading this email because i'm going to stop talking and instead give you the scoop on this week's specialty programming on WXYC 89.3 fm.  we've got a lot of exciting stuff this week, so check it out!

This Friday party with us on the Inside Track featuring the incredible and much-loved Detroit house artist Theo Parrish. American Intelligence is Parrish's first full-length solo release since 2007. Lavish electronic dance beats and samples incorporated in the midst of rhythmically complex grooves await from this prolific and influential artist. Get warmed up for all your Fridayescapades from 9-10pm!

On tonight's NEW SCIENCE EXPERIENCE local beat maker and GROVL tape label boss MBdV (SoundCloud) will be brining a cassette - based exploration of ambient, coldwave, noise and techno to the broadcast. Tune in from ten to midnight or check out the video stream at http://ustream.tv/channel/wxyc-nse

This week's edition of The Orange County Special, Sunday from 10am-1pm, will feature some new (unreleased) tunes from The Piedmont Melody Makers (Alice Gerrard, Jim Watson, Cliff Hale, & Chris Brashear) who play old-time, country and bluegrass music and make no apologies for it. They'll be performing at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro on Thursday, March 5th, and this Sunday we've got a ticket giveaway for that show on top of the new tunes.  More info @ http://www.artscenterlive.org/events/piedmont-melody-makers-alice-gerrard-jim-watson-cliff-hale-chris-brashear/

Hell or High Water's coming atcha again this Sunday from 1-2pm, bringing you a special selection of archived recordings from UNC's very own Southern Folklife Collection.  Don't miss it!

Tune in to Broken Music this week to explore some music by American composer George Crumb. Primarily active during the mid to late 20th century, Crumb is known for writing music that explores the wide variety of timbres and effects possible on both acoustic instruments and voice through the use of extended technique and sometimes amplification, famous works including Vox Balaenae or the string quartet Black Angels. Join us from 2-3pm on Sunday,

Skate Salon, XYC's first skateboarding specialty show, will premiere on Sunday from 5-6 pm. Hosts Mikey Bibo and Robbie Barnett along with special guests will entertain topics in skateboarding such as culture, criticism, history, and theory.

On Sports Rap this weekend we'll discuss our gloom and doom over Men's Basketball's horrendous loss to State, whatever comes of Saturday's game against Miami, and look forward to the last week of the regular season, previewing the Georgia Tech game and our epic final showdown with Duke in the Smith Center! Your host will also go on a rant about how people need to be nicer to basketball players, and then we'll move on to the NBA, where shit is crazy. Tune in at 9 p.m. Sunday night!

Monday on the Outside Track don't miss the ecstatic and ethereal jazz of Chicago-based composer and multi-media artist Rob Mazurek. Mazurek has composed for groups such as the Chicago Underground Duo, Sao Paolo Underground, Exploding Star Orchestra, and Pharaoh & the Underground (notice the pattern?). His newest release Return the Tides is a mysterious and spacey odessey of electronics, avant-garde jazz, with hazy hints of tropicalia in the fray. Tune in and space out 9-10!
