hi everybody,
i hope you're all feeling some sort of okay this week and if not, here's to things looking up for the weekend.  with the very end of the semester underway, things become quite intense around campus.  but deep in the depths of the UNC student union, WXYC continues to dish out top notch programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  let's take a look at this week's specials:

It's a great day for an Inside Track so join us at 9 PM this Friday night for a killer new full-length release from Population One AKA Terrence Dixon. Dixon entitled Theatre of a Confused Mind.  Although Dixon has recently spoken about retiring from music, his output has been non-stop since 1994 and he has since established himself as one of the holy figures of Detroit techno.  This new one under his oft used Population One moniker is a welcome addition to the Dixon catalog.  With deep, murky production and tracks that range from absolute bangers to slowed down headspaces, this release may be one of the best of the year.  Tune in fast at 9 PM to catch the first track "Out Of Control," which is a candidate for best vocal dance track on the year.  Enjoy!

New Science Experience will feature local DJ and Producer SpongeBath. Expect a dark n dirty experience. Tune in from ten to midnight if you are tryna reconsider your notions of "dance music"

This week on Hell or High Water the sounds of Memphis label, Hi Records, will be featured. When one thinks of the Memphis sound, one tends to automatically think of the two labels that are synonymous with the city, Stax and Sun Records; however, dig deeper into the musical memory of Memphis and one also finds Hi Records. Home to the likes of Al Green and Syl Johnson, Hi Records had its fair share of hit making talent, yet it is more oft forgotten than remembered. Tune in from 1pm-2pm.

Tune in to Broken Music at 2pm this Sunday as we listen to a recently reissued live performance titled Consequences (of Time and Place) from the London-based improvisational string trio Ist. Consisting of bassist Simon Fell, cellist Mark Wastell and harpist Rhodri Davies, Ist creates a challenging but rewarding set of pieces that find the trio stretching each instrument to its sonic limits, as evidenced by this live date from 1997.

Sports are upsetting. Hear us talk about it at 9 p.m. Sunday night on Sports Rap.

Mondays are about getting weird at WXYC, so let's check out some of the newest in strange sounds on the Outside Track. This week, catch some new duo improvisations from veteran team Andy Moor and Yannis Kyriakides entitled A Life Is A Billion Heartbeats.  Moor, a veteran guitarist heavily associated with the Dutch/international punk act The Ex, joins his electronic experimenting partner in crime Kyriakides for another instillation in their long-standing explorations of Greek rebetika music, an old genre of urban Greek folk music.  Kyriakides provides a sonic backdrop of processed old rebetika tunes upon which the two performers improvise.  They deconstruct melodic lines and generate sonic atmosphere for the chopped up tunes to a stunning effect.  Check this one out!
