hey there WXYCists,
well look what we have here, big ol' october.  i mean, thank god. sure, this month is associated with things like crisp air, colorful leaves, "sweater," "weather," and gourd-flavored beverages; but i urge all y'all to remember that it's just as much about ghosts, bones, spooks, blood, candy, and pranks.  we've got some mighty cool stuff happening on air this week, so let's cozy up, gather round the proverbial-campfire / actual-radio, crack open a pumpkin spice four loko, and let WXYC soundtrack your early autumn:

We're all in for a real treat this Friday evening - an On-Air Oumar Konaté Performance on WXYC 89.3 fm. Konaté, a guitarist from Mali who has played with the likes of Vieux Farka Touré, Sidi Touré, and Leila Goby, just released his debut international release, "Addoh," on Clermont. Konaté and his 2-piece band are currently touring around the US and we're lucky to have them making a stop in Chapel Hill. Tune in around 5pm to hear them play live on WXYC and be sure to catch their show at the Nightlight tonight at 9pm:

Tune in at 9 PM on Friday night for the Inside Track.  This week we are featuring a new release from the Khun Narin Electric Phin Band.  You know those awful viral videos that populate your Facebook feeds, shared by doofuses from past lives? Did you happen to catch the ONLY good one that was making the rounds earlier in 2014? Although it had the admittedly absurd titled of “MINDBLOWING HEAVY PSYCH FROM THAILAND,” the video was pretty captivating.  It shows a group of uniformed Thai musicians at a rural festival casually playing an electrified version of traditional Thai music, which incidentally sounds a lot like Western associations with heavy psychedelic music.  It’s really cool!  Someone got it in their mind to have them have a full-length release to be made available where the video garnered so much popularity.  Tune in and check out that full-length release from some killer long-form jams dominated by hypnotic percussion rhythms and virtuosic phin shredding.

WXYC's beat-oriented / dance / ~BODY MUSIC~ / "heavy contact" show is coming at you again this Friday night.  Tune in to New Science Experience from 10pm til midnight to hear DJ Alex B spin some tunes.  It'll be good, great, and maybe even "hot."

This week on Hell Or High Water, we're going to go to one of the crucible of blues music, Parchman Penitentiary. This nefarious place is as close to hell as one will find on this planet. Many are familiar with the sounds of Parchman, for it has incarcerated some of the greatest blues minds to live; however, popular memory perpetuates ideas that all of these voices are those of men. This week, we will explore female blues artists who were jailed at Parchman in the late 1930s.  Tune in on Sunday at 1pm.

This Sunday, Broken Music reviews the works of French composer Jean-Claude Risset. While Risset composed for ensembles of classical instruments, his greatest contribution is in the field of computer music and synthesis research. Risset worked with Max Matthews at New Jersey's Bell Labs, conducting research on the timbre of various instruments and applying these findings to synthetically recreate these sounds. He also delved deep into the seemingly infinite rise or fall of shepherd tones, devising a system to apply this concept to rhythm. Risset funneled these concepts into his own compositions for computer, and in the process crafted his own unique musical language. Our show begins at 2pm.

This week on Sports Rap, we'll take a break from complaining about the NFL to check in with the NBA! They had their media day earlier this week, and all the teams are in training camp. That means it's time to start making prediction, discuss simmering rivalries and lots of other fun basketball stuff. Also covered will be the probable UNC loss against Virginia Tech, Late Night with Roy (if I end up going), and whatever else comes to mind. Tune in at 9 on Sunday!

Don’t forget to turn on the radio Monday night at 9 PM for the Outside Track.  This week you can catch Never Really Been Into It, the first new release by North Carolina’s own Ashrae Fax in eleven years.  It’s a combination of new material, and reworked tracks from 12 or so years prior.  The album holds the same ethereal synth pop that Static Crash made them known for, albeit less noisy. Never Really… also carries the same timelessness of sound that there prior work does; it’s present while maintaining an undeniable kinship with 80s Goth new wave. Lead vocalist, Renee Mendoza has a striking range, confidence, and a pulsing radiance.  Other elements include bass, guitar, drum machine, and sax sometimes.  This could be one of the most powerful mood-inducing records of the year, so give it a listen!
