hey y'all!
unfortunately, summer is bump n'grinding to a halt, which means that (fortunately!) lots of WXYC DJs are returning to chapel hill after months away. i hope y'all will join me in celebrating this collective return to the listening area by tuning in to some of this week's programming:

Ignore the horrors of move-in day this Friday with the Inside Track9 PM on Friday night.  This we will feature the Tampa-based underground staple, Haves & Thirds, whose new release entitled You'll Put It Out Mister comes to us from Ted Records.  Catch the H&T formula once more with bare bones analog drum machine sounds and extremely lush synths.  Filled the brim with samples from all sorts of classic movies, from Demons to Police Academy, this release achieves nostalgia through purposefully forgotten cultural artifacts.  DJ Ryan M notes "the aspects of this project that sound like they could be overtly cheesy or goofy on paper come together in an incredibly dreamy way."  Check it out!

Tune into New Science Experience, WXYC's beat oriented show, tonight at 10pm to hear some relaxed deep house and techno jams.

This week on Hell Or High Water, let's take a trip down the Mississippi and into the streets of New Orleans to here the origins of much of American Jazz music. We'll delve into the music of the early New Orleans dance halls to hear the tones and sounds that would then travel to places like Chicago and Harlem to be re-imagined into new forms of Jazz. Tune in for one swinging hour of early recordings from the Big Easy on Sunday from 1-2pm.

Catch Broken Music this Sunday for an hour of works by Belgian composer Joris De Laet. Beyond a few early lessons on violin and cello, De Laet is completely self taught, crafting adventurous and imaginative works for voice, tape, and acoustic ensemble. Working first at the IPEM and later at his own Studio for Experimental Music (SEM) in Antwerp, he championed the Belgian avant garde, organizing concerts and lectures. De Laet continues to produce music and currently teaches electro-acoustic composition at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. Tune in at 2pm.

Tune into Sports Rap Sunday night at 9 to hear the show's esteemed panel tackle the latest on USA basketball as they prepare for the FIBA World Cup later this month, discuss UNC's impending trip to the Bahamas to play some exhibition games, and preview UNC football's season. We'll also discuss the release of the NBA schedule, the reported 3-team Kevin Love trade (including Kobe Bryant's opinion of it), and the Tony Stewart incident and NASCAR's strange place in American Sports Culture.

Monday night brings up the Outside Track at 9 PM and the last moments of the academic summer.  Feel the vibes with an excellent new release from rising Ghanaian super star, King Ayisoba.  His new release,Wicked Leaders, explores Ayisoba's roots in North Ghana, employing almost exclusively instruments from this region.  You can hear the guluku drums, the percussive sinyaka, the wii flute and the stringed kologo.  These awesome sounds come together in an upbeat, exalting style featuring powerful group vocals led by Ayisoba's own highly versatile voice.  Don't miss it!
