Thousands of students have just magically descended on UNC’s campus, and we are welcoming them with a fun week of programming. Let’s see what’s in store for them!
Check out the Inside Track Friday night at 9 PM to hear the new release Swisher from Blondes. This NYC techno duo earned a sort of ‘outsider’ dance tag through some 2k11 EPs on the label RVNG where the organic textures unfolded over understated drums. This album differs from its predecessors by being danceable with drums in the forefront, sometimes even resulting in hard techno runs. But, at the same time, some of the keyboard patterns are so intricate, the synths so captivating and the progression so natural to the point of sometimes eschewing straight-ahead beats. When it wants to go hard, it grabs you with a cold beat, even a little darkwave synth, and spits you out through garbled faint vocal samples. But when it’s relaxing, it’s beautifully delicate and explorative.
Start off Sunday at 10am with the Orange County Special,
our weekly specialty show featuring the finest folk, traditional
and neo-traditional music the station has to offer.
This week on Hell Or High Water, the music of Piedmont native, John Dee Holeman, will be pumped through the airwaves. Born just up the road in Hillsborough, Holeman relocated to Durham at the age of 25 and has lived there since. Featuring blues sounds from right here in the Piedmont and finding other inspiration from the Blues of Texas, Holeman provides us with a contemporary example of older stylings. Sunday at 1 PM!
This week's Broken
Music will feature Decay &
Persistence, a new hour-long
installation piece from Corwall-based noise manipulator Alice Kemp. Out on the
German label Fragment Factory, Decay was debuted in September 2012 at a week long
residency in Serbia and later refined for a performance at the Venice International
Performance Art Week that had evolved into interactive 24-hour audio and visual
display. Kemp artfully distills both performances into a slowly building but
eventually violently churning sea of noise. Tune in Sunday at 2 PM to hear Decay in its entirety.
This week on the Backyard BBQ Harrison will be hosting Heaven, a shoegaze band featuring members from NC but based in NYC. One of their members was a staple of the acclaimed Chapel Hill indie rock band, The Comas. Another one of their members was in the legendary shoegaze- dream-pop group Swervedriver, which gives a pretty close approximation of their sound. Tune in Sunday night at 8 PM!
Join Sarah and Reilly Sunday night at 9 PM for Sports Rap. Join these two sports and culture experts for everything from UNC athletics to ontological investigations into what makes a sport. Slam Dunk!
Tune in Monday night at 9 PM for the Outside Track with the Meridian Bros. Music from Bogota’s Meridian Brothers, fronted by Eblis Álvarez (Frente Cumbiero, Ondatrópica); this album features tracks culled from three albums which were previously available only through local Colombian label La Distrotofónica. Álvarez’ longtime fascination with the history of Colombian rock and his classical training in electronic music and signal processing converge here, in this relentlessly awesome exploration of the sounds of 60s and 70s Colombian rock, a lush and lucid amalgam of psych and surf rock, Highlife, and jazz elements with Colombian cumbias, salsas, and currulao.
On Thursday night from 9 PM to Midnight WXYC's Thursday Night Feature will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that most blueswailing of British Invasion acts, the Yardbirds. Host Blastoff Bob and returning guest Jeff Jarema (local liner notes scribe for reissue labels like Sundazed Music) will spin three hours of the fuzzy guitar fireworks that launched a thousand garage bands.
