SECOND VIENNESE SCHOOL, a Movement in 20th Century Classical Music on the
Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 9 p.m.-midnight
In 1904, the 30-year old violinist and composer Arnold Schoenberg took on
the 21-year old Anton von Webern and the 19-year old Alban Berg as his
private students thus marking the beginning of one of the most
controversial and influential movements in 20th century classical
music-now known as the SECOND VIENNESE SCHOOL. Early performances of some
of their most famous songs incited outcries and even violence from
audiences who often grew so angry that performances had to be stopped
early. Yet the SECOND VIENNESE SCHOOL explored directions in music which
moved away from the whole tradition of Western tonality and worked out the
details of a new musical vision: the twelve tone technique. On this week's
Thursday Night Feature, we'll be listening to music from the SECOND
VIENNESE SCHOOL to try to trace the development of this innovative musical
style and understand why it was considered so revolutionary.

SHAPE NOTE SINGING on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1 p.m.-2 p.m.
This week, we will feature SHAPE NOTE SINGING using recordings from Little
Vine Primitive Baptist Church in Empire, Alabama. Shape note, also known
as Sacred Harp and fasola singing, is a form of notation for untrained
church choirs. Each note is written on ordinary staff lines, but also with
a shape that indicates its position in the scale. Tune in for this unique
opportunity to learn about something new!
