BRITISH POST-PUNK on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 9 p.m.-midnight.
On this week's TNF, we'll explore the first five years of post-punk, the
music that blossomed in the United Kingdom after bands such as the Sex
Pistols, the Clash, X-Ray Spex and the Adverts sent a battering ram
through the social and musical establishment of the time, finally making
good on the promises of the Stooges, New York Dolls, T. Rex and Roxy
Music. Specifically, we'll be hearing from about 20 bands that, for myriad
reasons, never became legends in this wildly creative scene; everybody
knows Joy Division and Wire, but what about Essential Logic, the Sound and
Desperate Bycycles? The goal is to provide something new for even the most
hip listener, so tune in Thursday night for a three-hour sampling of
angular goodness.

Various Artists, "MALI LOLO! STARS OF MALI" on the Inside Track, Friday 9 p.m.
A splendid little grab bag of popular music from contemporary Mali,
featuring figureheads like Ali Farka Toure with Afel Bocoum, Oumou
Sangare, Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko, Super Rail Band and others
ever reinventing the tradition. Out on Smithsonian Folkways.

LAURA NYRO, "Gonna Take A Miracle" on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2 p.m.
On this week's Classic Inside Track, enjoy pop pleasure in its purest form
from the most criminally neglected member of the late 60s/early 70s female
singer-songwriter club that also included Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and
Judee Sill. Like them, Laura Nyro combines lyricism and musicianship with
a tart yet sweet sensuality, a mix that legions of latter-day imitators
have failed to capture. On 1971's "Gonna Take A Miracle," Nyro teams up
with soul trio Labelle (of disco-comp staple "Lady Marmalade") for covers
of pop classics from her childhood in the Bronx. (description by Amy
Weldon)

Various Artists, "OPEN UP AND SAY...@<%_|^[!]" on the Inside Track, Monday
9 p.m.
Sampler of recent releases on renowned Oakland, CA playful electronic
label Tigerbeat6, home to Kid606, Cex, dj/rupture, Max Tundra, Numbers,
etc. Chock full of vocal tracks from the label's stable of divas,
troublemakers and rave-damaged wackos. Tune in and prime yourself for the
Tigerbeat6 showcase at the Cat's Cradle the following evening featuring
Kid606, dj/rupture, Dwayne Sodahberk and Knifehandchop!
