LADY SINGS THE BLUES on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday
9 p.m.-midnight
This week's Thursday night feature will commemorate the career of Billie
Holiday.
CHUCK WAGON GANG on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
We'll hear an hour's worth of the early songs of the Chuck Wagon Gang
this week on Hell or High Water. Formed in 1936 as the Carter Quartet
(no, not that Carter family, though their sound is a little similar),
they were an early crossover group from gospel to country music (and
back again).
ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO, "Bap-tizm" on the Classic Inside Track,
Sunday 2-3 p.m.
"Bap-tizm," the Art Ensemble of Chicago's 1972 album recorded live at
the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, captures the group's sound and
chemistry as well as (if not better than) any other of their releases.
It shows the group's controlled chaos through a chaotic and meandering
yet solid live performance. This lineup of the group is possibly the
most heralded of the many the band has gone through, and it includes
Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, and Joseph Jarman. The Art Ensemble of
Chicago was formed in 1966 and presaged the mixture of free
jazz, European art music, and African indigenous music that has
infiltrated much contemporary music.
FIN FANG FOOM on the Backyard BBQ, Sunday 7-8 p.m.
At last! Fin Fang Foom is gonna be on the Backyard BBQ this Sunday,
June 1st, talking about their recent trip to Europe and of course, their
exceedingly fine, just-released CD, "With the Gift Comes the Curse,"
which we will definitely be playing. The tour of Europe means everyone
has a story to tell, and the new CD sounds fabulous; be sure to tune in,
and if you like what you hear, remember their official CD release party at
Go! Saturday June 7th with Bats and Mice (w/Ben Davis), and The Nein
(post-White Octave/Gold Chainz... with a little on the Cold Sides).
