Sunday 2-3 p.m.: CORNELIUS CARDEW AND THE SCRATCH ORCHESTRA, "The Great
Learning" on the Classic Inside Track

CORNELIUS CARDEW AND THE SCRATCH ORCHESTRA, "The Great Learning" on the
Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Created and performed between 1968 and 1971 as a series of seven
"paragraphs" centered around the teachings of Confucius, "The
Great Learning" marked a time when Cardew was transitioning from the
more avant-garde methods of his teacher Karlheinz Stockhausen to a more
politically oriented left-wing sensibility that would ultimately lead him
to help found the Revolutionary Communist Party of Britain in 1979.
The Scratch Orchestra performing on this album was created in 1969 out
of a class Cardew taught at Morely College in London, consisting of
founding members Cardew, Michael Parsons, and Howard Skempton, as well as over
40 other contributors. "The Great Learning" features a variety of methods
and instruments, including stones, penny whistles, practiced chanting, and
group drumming.
