the Classic Inside Track

EUGENE MCDANIELS, "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse" on the Classic
Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Eugene McDaniels' "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse" never had much of
a chance at success when originally released in 1971 on Atlantic Records.
Almost as soon as the album was released, then-Vice President Spiro Agnew
heard the lyrics and found such offense in them that he called the label
and forced them to stop promoting it. He took issue with McDaniel's rants
against everyday racist brutality in "Supermarket Blues," his call to
enforce protests with action in "Freedom Death Dance," and, in the title
track, his idea that dark sinister forces were controlling everyone.
These concepts are all wrapped together in the album with a sound that
draws from many different musical sources, including soul, funk, and
free jazz. McDaniels was born in 1935 and this album was his 10th and
last.
