FUNK AND SOUL FROM GREENSBORO TO GASTONIA on the Thursday Night
Feature, Thursday 9 p.m.-midnight
In 1971, a Greensboro funk band called the Electric Express had a
platinum hit with "It's the Real Thing." This was the only blip on the
national radar from a talented town that produced dozens more jams from
'68 to '77. Up through the early '80s, cities like Gastonia and Durham
had their own funk and soul acts, but they've been mostly forgotten
since, just like the ones from Greensboro. On this program, their rare,
slept-on, and/or lost efforts will be featured non-stop. Prepare for
sweet soul, raw funk instrumentals, and goofy P-funk workouts, done up
just as well or better than the era's hits.

NORTH CAROLINA GOSPEL MUSIC on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
This Sunday, Hell or High Water helps to wrap up African-American
History Month with an hour of North Carolina gospel steeped in
African-American traditions.

JUDEE SILL, “Judee Sill” on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Much about Judee Sill, including the year and circumstances of her
death, remains in doubt. But few would question the heroin-ravaged
genius apparent on her darkly religious, and lushly orchestrated self-
titled debut album, the first record ever to be released on David
Geffen’s Asylum Records. Featuring production by Graham Nash, Bob
Harris, and Jim Pons of the Turtles, “Judee Sill” remains a high-water
mark of the “Laurel Canyon” folk sound of the early seventies.

THE SPINNS & DRAGSTRIP SYNDICATE on the Backyard BBQ, Sunday 7-8 p.m.
This Sunday, we have two bands, swirling in tandem *and* unison, like a
great muckle perpetual motion machine. The Spinns are a fresh, new
psychotic reaction, guaranteed to have your hips in a swivel and your
head in a whirl with their amazing retro 60's garage-rock... and while
we're in the garage... nope, that ain't the roar of nitro-burnin'
funny cars you hear, it's just the Spinns' pals, Dragstrip Syndicate.
When these guys do it live, bring your ear plugs, dude! The Spinns are
playing the late show at the Cave after the BBQ (@/23/03), and The
Spinns and Dragstrip have an upcoming gig together in Raleigh at
King's, Friday, February 28. All we gotta say is, careful with that
nitro mixture, man, 'cause this is gonna be one explosive evening, for
sure!

ALSO: Tickets to Texas troubadour Robert Earl Keen’s show at the
Carolina Theatre in Durham will be given away on this Sunday’s Orange
County Special. The performance will be on February 26. Check out
www.carolinatheatre.org for more details.
