TOP 20 RELEASES OF 2002 on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday
9 p.m.-midnight
Tune in this Thursday night to hear selections from the Top 20 Releases
of 2002, as chosen by the WXYC staff. Listen as Ajax and Athena help
you settle bets and find out what rocked and ruled, and listen in for a
chance to win either the #1 or #2 CDs from the list.

DEFENESTRATOR, “Raw Deal” on the Inside Track, Friday 9 p.m.
Impressive debut by this local sextet led by the Micro-East Collective's
"Crowmeat" Bob Pence (alto sax, bass clarinet and guitar), accompanied
by David Jordan (clarinet, moog synth), Chris Eubank (cello), David
Morris (tuba), Christopher Thurston (bass) and Daniel Hall (drums).
Tight, intricate writing recalling the likes of Curlew, or the groups
of Philip Johnston and Henry Threadgill. Like if New York's "downtown"
scene came to the Triangle!

PRINCE FAR I, “Under Heavy Manners” on the Classic Inside Track,
Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Prince Far I, aka the 'Voice of Thunder' due to his resonant Barry
White-like baritone, was one of the most capitivating toasters in
Jamaica during the late '70s, adding a depth and weight to his militant
Rastafarian messages that few other DJs equalled. This 1976 album,
produced by Joe Gibbs and featuring Gibbs' house band the Professionals
(including a young Sly and Robbie), is one of his early best, full of
heavy rhythms and dub-infused mixes. It includes his classic "Big Fight"
in which he acts as commentator of a fictional boxing match pitting
Babylon and Natty Dreadlocks!

Various Artists: “BLACK AND PROUD: The Soul of the Black Panther Era,
Vol. 2” on the Inside Track, Monday 9 p.m.
The second volume in German imprint Trikont's series of compilations
devoted to songs giving voice to 'Black Power,' both those
contemporaneous to the activity of the Black Panther Party as well as
more recent recordings. Arists include Gil Scott-Heron, Cannonball
Adderley, Derrick Harriott, Miriam and Mbongi Makeba and Assata Shakur
& the Asian Dub Foundation.
