ORCHESTRA BAOBAB, "Specialists in All Styles" on the Inside Track,
Wednesday 9 p.m.
On the heels of the highly lauded "Pirate's Choice" reissue on Nonesuch,
original members of the storied Senegalese dance band Orchestra Baobab
have reunited for their first studio recording in fourteen years. Along
with featured guests Youssou N'Dour and Ibrahim Ferrer (of the Buena
Vista Social Club), they revisit some of their vast repetoire exploring
the intersections of African and Cuban musics. Out on Nonesuch.
COMMAND RECORDS on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday
9 p.m.-midnight
This show will feature music released on the Command Records label,
which operated in New York City from 1959 to 1972. This is the label
that brought us Persuasive Percussion, solo records by Dick Hyman, lots
of early Moog recordings -- and numerous other surprises. Though
Command Records are valued today mostly for their kitschiness (& their
minimal, modernist cover art & sprawling liner notes), the label
provided an important creative outlet for highly talented but largely
unacknowledged musicians: NYC's commercial session players. Expect to
hear some high kitsch, but also some extremely impressive playing,
arranging and recording work by the New York pros.
Various Artists, "MUSIC FOR DANCEFLOORS: The Cream of the Bosworth
Library Sessions" on the Inside Track, Friday 9 p.m.
One full hour of European funk, breakbeat rare, and exotic jazzed
ditties, emanating from library LPs released by the London music
publishers Bosworth in the '70s. Library music was created as a
resource for folks needing tunes for their jingles, soundtracks,
advertisements, and the like. The artists were close to anonymous, but
the music could be so good. Now those who dig deep for samples are all
about these records, and so they're rare. This disc is a solid
listener, and creamy too. Out on the Strut label from the UK.
GALAXIE 500, "Today" on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Released in 1988, Galaxie 500's debut LP "Today" introduced their unique
style blending psychedelic rock, post-punk, and British slowcore,
establishing a precedent for future dreamy rock bands. Galaxie 500 would
go on to release two more albums before splitting up to form Luna and
Damon and Naomi. "Today" also features a cover of Jonathan Richman and
the Modern Lovers' "Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste."
THE MILITARY IN THE AGE OF TERRORISM on Northern Hemisphere Live, Sunday
5-7 pm.
This Sunday we will be discussing the global military buildup in the age
of terrorism with peace activist Lenore Yarger, UNC graduate student
Matthew Smith, and Lt. Col. Riley of UNC's Air Force ROTC. We will also
discuss the School of the Americas on the date of the annual protest.
GLENN BOOTHE on the Backyard BBQ, Sunday 7-8 p.m.
Glenn Boothe will be hosting this week's BBQ. For the latest version of
this week's menu, which is updated religiously as the dishes become
available, always check our website:

TODAY IS THE DAY, "Sadness Will Prevail" on the Inside Track,
Monday 9 p.m.
Brainchild of guitar wiz, producer and generally tortured soul Steve
Austin, Today is the Day have released a slew of albums over the past
eight years on Amphetamine Reptile and Relapse - and this 2-disc
excursion (conveniently condensed onto one disc for us radio
broadcasters) is perhaps their most intense soundtrack to your worst
nightmare, a sample-dotted affair that combines classic grindcore,
noir-ish atmospherics and even piano balladry into a moody and striking
whole. They will be performing Tuesday, November 26 at Go! Studios -
don't miss it!
