EITHER/ORCHESTRA, "Afro-Cubism" on the Inside Track, Wednesday 9 p.m.
After a period of dormancy in the later 90s, this veteran Boston big
band has resumed activity. They've immediately hit stride on this
outing, where they explore the intersections of Afro-Caribbean and
African musics, including an interpretation of Teshome Meteku's
'Yezeemed Yebaed' previously heard on the first volume in the renowned
Ethiopiques series. Out on the Accurate imprint.

25 YEARS OF LOCAL MUSIC on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday
9 p.m.-midnight
As part of WXYC's 25-year anniversary, we will take a look back at the
last 25 years in local music. Focusing primarily on the state's rich
heritage of rock music, the show will feature both hit songs and rare
tracks by those acts that achieved acclaim beyond the state line - and
those artists that should have. The show will be hosted by the founding
members of the Backyard Bar-B-Q, WXYC's weekly local music show: Glenn
Boothe (former WXYC Music Director and ex-music industry executive,)
Steve Balcom (former WXYC MD and ex-Mammoth Records) and Frank Heath
(owner of local venue Cat's Cradle).

JENNY TOOMEY, "Tempting: Jenny Toomey Sings the Songs of Franklin Bruno"
on the Inside Track, Friday 9 p.m.
On her second solo album for the Misra label, the former Tsunami and
Grenadine frontwoman re-interprets the songs of Franklin Bruno (of
Nothing Painted Blue, Extra Glenns fame). Backed by an extended session
band that includes Calexico, Bruno's wry lovesongs are brought to life
with elegant arrangements of strings, horns and 'southwestern' motifs
that recall the likes of Jimmy Webb.

RAY BARRETTO, "Acid" on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Trumpets, timbales, piano, bass, bell, guiro, and conga make a joyful
noise on this 1968 latin soul album led by Ray Barretto, conguero
supreme who recently performed at UNC-CH. More of what it is: a tasty
combo pack of salsa, funk, and soul; a collection of effervescent
bilingual vocals that bubble like beans; a classic in the field of latin
groovers; a long-player that does not let up.

Various Artists, "CAROLINA SOUL SURVEY" on the Inside Track, Monday 9
p.m.
A bunch of sprightly '70s soul that never hit it big, all recorded at
Reflection Sound Studios in Charlotte! Mostly obscure Carolinians are
represented, but Eldridge Holmes - the biggest name - was straight-up
Crescent City, and that's how Reflection got started with R&B in the
first place; New Orleans' Sea-Saint Studios had hooked up with eventual
Reflections owner Wayne Jernigan because he was an ace at sweetening the
rough NOLA sound on tunage by Lee Dorsey, the Meters, and others. Then
soul pinched him hard, and he had small-time Carolina artists coming to
Charlotte left and right to lay down sides that ended up the victim of
poor distribution. Now unheard and rare as hen's teeth, 20 of them are
here, and they're either positively sweet or southern & gritty, and
that's a home-cooked blessing for the ages.

Also this week and every week:

Friday, 9 p.m.
