GOLDEN GATE QUARTET AND JOSH WHITE, "Freedom" on the Inside Track,
Wednesday 9 p.m.
First release of a legendary concert performance, recorded in 1940 at the
Library of Congress, featuring the pioneering Virginia jubilee singers and
folk icon in a collaborative setting. The program consists of spirituals,
blues and work songs, as well as commentary by Alan Lomax, poet Sterling
Brown, and the godfather of the Harlem Renaissance, Alain Locke. A
monumental document. Out on Bridge Records.

WEST AFRICAN DANCE BANDS OF THE '60s and '70s on the Thursday Night
Feature, Thursday 9 p.m.-midnight
The dance music of Guinea, Mali and Senegal was profoundly influenced by
the Cuban dance rhythms of the day -- rumba, cha cha, salsa, etc. -- as well
as the Zairean guitar
playing style of Franco and OK Jazz. However, the sounds of Bembeya Jazz
National, les Etoiles de Dakar,
Orchestra Baobab and others retained a distinctly West African sound derived
from traditional kora playing and
griot singing styles and shone with the joy of new-found national
identities in the years following independence. So grab a cocktail, your
sweetie and your dancing shoes for some of the smoothest music on earth
...

RUINS, "1986-1992" on the Inside Track, Friday 9 p.m.
Early material from the tremendous, influential Japanese bass/drums duo,
released in their native Japan prior to their introduction to American
audiences in the early '90s. A fast and complex hyper-progressive rock
onslaught sure to blow minds and drop jaws. Re-released on Skin Graft
Records.

Timely topics with BILL & TODD on Northern Hemisphere Live, Sunday 5-7 pm.
This Sunday NHL's Bill and Todd will host an open show with sundry topics
relating to the current events of the day. Listeners are invited to call
in and participate.

THE ENO RIVER FESTIVAL on Backyard BBQ, Sunday 7-8 pm
This week the Backyard BBQ will focus on the artists of the upcoming Eno
River Festival and other July 4th
musical events of note.

ALIAS, "The Other Side of the Looking Glass" on the Inside Track, Monday 9
p.m.
The debut LP from this hip hop producer/vocalist is an expansive and
contemplative journey through the mind of a composer. Honest and
poignant, without getting overly emotional, the record is as much a
journey into Alias' production and innovative beatmaking as it is a
display of his sizable rhymesaying talents. On the Anticon label.
