OUR LEAST FAVORITE SONGS on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 9
p.m.-midnight
This week's TNF present songs that individual DJs have nominated as their
personal least favorites. Listen out of masochistic fascination and call
in to nominate your own most despised track.
Various Artists, "A TRIBUTE TO NASHVILLE" on the Inside Track, Friday 9
p.m.
Here's an interesting concept album -- a tribute to a soundtrack. The
soundtrack in question is that of Robert Altman's 1975 film
"Nashville," which was built of quirky homages to country music. This time
around a group of alt-country stars is recreating it, with a roster
including Neko Case, Dallas Good of the Sadies, Carl Newman of the New
Pornographers, and a number of other primarily Canadian musicians. On Mint
Records.
THE STILLHOUSE BOTTOM BAND on The Orange County Special, Sunday 10 a.m.-1
p.m..
This Sunday, the Stillhouse Bottom Band will perform live on the Orange
County Special. The group has exploded onto the Triangle music scene with
driving old-time music with a tasteful dollop of bluegrass showmanship
thrown in. The band will perform at the Carrboro ArtsCenter on Saturday
April 6; call 919-929-2787 ext. 105 for details.
The music of SON HOUSE on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
A major blues figure, Son House was one of the originators of the
Mississippi Delta blues style. Along with Charley Patton and Willie Brown,
House defined early Delta blues in the late 1920s and 1930s with his
irregular, often furious guitar work and his intensely emotional
vocals. So profound was House's blues style that he was the main influence
of the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson as well as Muddy Waters.
VINCE GUARALDI'S "Modern Setting for the Choral Eucharist" on the Classic
Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
In honor of Easter, this week we will be enjoying Vince Guaraldi's "Modern
Setting for the Choral Eucharist" performed live at Grace Cathedral, San
Francisco, May 21, 1965 on the Classic Inside Track. This recording is
perhaps the only religious score to seamlessly blend modern jazz piano
with centuries old Gregorian hymns. Guaraldi is joined on this album by
Lee Charlton on drums, Tom Beeson on bass and, of course, the St. Paul's
choir directed by Barry Mineah.
JESSE WALKER on Northern Hemisphere Live, Sunday 5-7 p.m.
This week, NHL is tentatively scheduled to interview Jesse Walker, author
of "Rebels on the Air." His book is a non-fiction survey of the history of
free form and pirate radio and how the commercial versions of
"progressive" and free form radio were eliminated by consultants and
salesmen. Otherwise, you'll be treated to Bill and Todd's usual
ruminations on current events. Listeners are invited to call in and
participate.
Various Artists, "ETHIOPIQUES 10: ETHIOPIAN BLUES AND BALLADS" on the
Inside Track, Monday 9 p.m.
The tenth volume in the fantastic, much-celebrated Ethiopiques series
brings you more from the American-influenced golden age of Ethiopian music
in the '60s and '70s. This time out, the focus is on blues-influenced
songs and ballads (Ethiopian slow jams, as it were). On Buda Musique
records.
