THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 9 p.m.-midnight
On the eve of the scheduled execution of John Hardy Rose right here in
North Carolina, the Thursday Night Feature will be devoted to exploring
songs that reference the ultimate penalty - from hangings to the electric
chair to lethal injection. The death penalty has been explored in the
blues, country, folk, rock, and hip hop -- from Hurricane Harry's absurd
R&B "Last Meal" to Bruce Springsteen's more somber "Dead Man Walking."
We'll survey how this anomalous feature of our criminal justice system has
been treated in song. Information about the current administration of the
death penalty will be discussed throughout.

MEMPHIS MUSIC on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
This week's Hell or High Water features music from Memphis -- exploring
gospel, blues, rockabilly and soul recorded between the mid-'20s and the
late '70s. The show will include highlights from the Sun, Hi, and Stax
record labels.

THE LA'S on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Coming on the heels of The Smiths, The La's nearly emerged as the next
big jangly guitar rock band before suffocating under the obsessive
perfectionism of frontman Lee Mavers. Still, their early singles "Way
Out" (1987) and "There She Goes" (1988) paved the way for Madchester
acts like The Stone Roses, The Charlatans UK, and (sad but true) Oasis.
Join host Tom this Sunday as we enjoy a remastered rendition of The
La's 1990 LP as well as a few b-sides and live tracks.

A discussion of THE WAR ON TERRORISM and CHILD SOLDIERS on Northern
Hemisphere Live, Sunday 5-7 p.m.
This week NHL will explore several subjects: developments in the War on
Terrorism, the question of whether there can be a just war, and child
soldiers in Africa. Host Kristen will be speaking with Prof. Tim McKeown
of UNC's political science department about the impact of the War on
Terrorism on the state of international relations. Prof. Doug MacLean of
the philosophy department will share his thoughts on Just War Theory. In
the second half of the show, Jay Hemingway-Foday will discuss the problem
of child soldiers and relate some of her experiences in Sierra Leone.
