THE BEAUTY OF THE EVERYDAY on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 9
p.m.-midnight
This week on the Thursday Night Feature, host John examines music that
expresses the beauty of the everyday, mundane experiences of life. In this
way, we'll make connections between laundry machines, John Cage, dirt,
Modest Mouse, frogs, Matmos, crawfish, and Joni Mitchell (among others),
all culminating with a presentation of Glenn Gould's radio documentary
"The Idea of North" in its entirety. We hope to demonstrate how beauty
can be found not as an inherent quality to any particular experience, but
in the way we frame that experience.
The HIPPY HOOTENANNY on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
This week Hell or High Water will feature the "Hippy Hootenanny" -- an
hour
devoted to '60s and '70s country-rock. Featured artists will include the
Dillards, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Everlys.
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND'S "WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT" on the Classic Inside
Track, Sunday 2-3
p.m.
This week's Classic Inside Track will be The Velvet Underground's "White
Light/White Heat." This release was a no-holds-barred frontal assault on
cultural and aesthetic propriety. Recorded without the input of either
Nico
or Andy Warhol, "White Light/White Heat" was the purest and rawest
document
of the key Velvet lineup of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and
Maureen Tucker, capturing the group at its toughest and most abrasive.
"GIRL DIRECTOR" author Andrea Richards on Northern Hemisphere Live, Sunday
5-7 p.m.
This week's NHL features Andrea Richards, author of the newly published
book "Girl Director." We'll be discussing women in film, women who make
film, and the importance of encouraging young girls to pursue creative
activities like filmmaking. The show coincides with this weekend's Ms.
Films festival at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro (for more information see
www.artscenterlive.org).
