CZECH-STRAVAGANZA ON THE THURSDAY NIGHT FEATURE, Thursday 9 p.m.-12 a.m.
This week's feature kicks off the "Czech-stravaganza," a month-long series
of events including theater and a poster exhibition. Host Celia will play
Czech rock and popular music from the 1960s to the present, and will
discuss how the changing Czechoslovakian political situation influenced
music. The feature will highlight the influential avant-garde rock band the
Plastic People of the Universe, as well as contemporary Czech stylings in
the punk, country, and hip hop genres.

HELL OR HIGH WATER: MUSIC FROM THE SOUTHERN FOLKLIFE COLLECTION, Sunday 1-2
p.m.
This week Hell or High Water spotlights early country radio in the mountain
city of Roanoke, Virginia. When Roanoke's WDBJ signed on the air in 1924,
it was the only radio station for 150 miles and listeners had to mail in
their requests. And until the mid-1950s, live country music programs were
staples of radio and long-term radio engagements made musicians' careers.
The show will include songs and programs broadcast over four Roanoke
stations from 1934-1952.

CLASSIC INSIDE TRACK, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
This week's CIT features "Classic Cole," the songs of Cole Porter. Porter,
one of America's great songwriters, wrote music and lyrics for innumerable
shows and films in the '20s, '30s and '40s.

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE LIVE, Sunday 5-7 p.m.
This week's NHL addresses issues surrounding terrorism in its global and
historical contexts; listeners are welcome to call in. Host Kristen will
discuss the September 11 attack and compare it to acts of terrorism that
have taken place in South Africa, Algeria, Palestine, and Eritrea. The
program will also the ethics and morality both of terrorism and the
response to it. Guests include Tim McKeown of UNC's political science
department, Doug MacLean of the philosophy department, and Bereket Selassie
of the African studies department.
