I have not personally been on this trail. From what I know of the area, it should be flat, two track road. There is a flagstone quarry nearby so I know 4WD vehicles can make it that far. The map shows a trail near the Canyon rim. The map shows little elevation change. There are some trees and sweeping views of the Rio Chama valley below, including views of Abiquiu Lake. I can imagine some rocky parts due to the flagstone. As far as the geology goes, this should take us into fossil territory. I plan to drive part of it before the ride to check for the number of trailer parking areas.  I don't anticipate problems though.

Carolyn,

It is the El Rito near Abiquiu. Copper Canyon appears on the Abiquiu quad map as "Canon del Cobre" We will be driving to El Rito and taking FS rd 137 west to just past Madera Creek. Copper Canyon is a little known-big canyon north of Abiquiu and south of El Rito.  We'll be way up on the rim this time.

Which El Rito is this? I'm having trouble finding an El Rito by a Copper Canyon.

A geology ride with Kirt Kempter is tentatively planned for Sunday, April 18th, weather permitting and pending confirmation. I'd like to get a headcount for those interested in this ride. It will be held on the rim of Copper Canyon near El Rito. If some of you remember the last geology ride held in the canyon, it was spectacular. Lots to see. Bring a lunch and a friend. Cost $20 per person.

Another ride, is National Trails Day on Saturday, June 5th. Back Country Horsemen of Santa Fe will be clearing/recon the Windsor Trail near the Santa Fe Ski Basin. Joining us will be the American Hiking Society, the Forest Service, and the Trail Alliance of Santa Fe. Please help us commemorate this special day.

Please RSVP to info AT equine-escapes.com   for either ride.
