A little bit about me. I live in Los Alamos, where I keep
one horse in the county stable lots here on North Mesa. Los Alamos
has incredible trails on mesa tops and canyon bottoms, but the downside is
that although my horse lives a mere 1/4 mile away, as the bird flies,
driving there takes most residents about 15 minutes. We all dream of
bridges across the canyons. Ha ha.
I am a volunteer search and
rescue (SAR) responder with New Mexico State Police. Currently I am
not a member of a SAR team, but I am a Planning Section Chief (an
individual resource; I get called directly instead of through a
recognized SAR team). I am also an officer and occasional meet
director and course designer for New Mexico Orienteers, which hosts public
field navigation meets at a growing number of locations in
New Mexico. Starting this year, I write a monthly column for The
Horsemen's Voice about trail news. Trail news is distinct from ride
reports and other kinds of equestrian travel stories. Trail news is
about anything to do with advocating, planning, building, and maintaining
trails. As I write the column each month I have been amazed at how
much there is to write about, news to me and almost everyone else
too. Equestrian trail riders in New Mexico clearly need better
networking with each other. So I started TREQ-NM to help us do
that.
New Mexico is a wonderful place for trail riding now, but imagine
what it could be 100 years from now. It could be horrible, or
fabulous. We have the opportunity *right now* to help determine which
it will be. I am doing what I can to make it fabulous. World
class fabulous, in fact.
