Hi,
I'm looking for folks who love winter squash and would like to take part in a project to develop new varieties of it.
I live in Wisconsin. This year I am creating initial crosses of quite a few different varieties. I'm hand-pollinating and crossing both ways (Using varieties A & B as both mother and father), to preserve genetic info. only present in the cytoplasm of the female involved.
I'm looking for folks who would like to grow out some of these next year. At least six plants of a given seed and twelve would be better. They will need to hand-pollinate a female flower on each plant, using a male flower also from that same plant, and save that seed for future use. They will also keep notes regarding how local conditions, how each plant grew and produced and about the size, coloration, flavor, texture and storing quality of its fruits. Then we will put our heads together and decide which seeds to grow the next year.
After about 5 years, we should have some great new, stable varieties of squash!
Please pass this invitation on to others who may be interested. And please let me know of groups you are aware of that I might share this info. with.
Thanks,
Shivani Arjuna
