It was unusual news and significant as it points to the less desired
effects of global warming, resulting climate change and unpredictable
weather events. Drought will be difficult to deal with in many places. It
is a good sign that people in government and industry managing
infrastructure
are far sighted enough to appreciate what has been done in the past, tried
and true methods.

Things made of stone and rainwater fascinate me. I used to build stone
drywalls on landscape jobs, retaining walls for terracing and
Japanese-style stone gutters (under roof overhangs) for site drainage. Now
these structures would be used to conduct water to some kind of storage,
aquaculture impoundment, constructed wetlands or irrigation of plantings or
gardens.

Stones as primary building material are used in the following structures:

retaining walls for agricultural terracing on slopes and mountainsides

airwells and dewponds

canals and lined ditches used as water conduits

Quanats in the Middle East (parts are underground and some are narrow
canals in urban areas, often covered with stone slabs in pedestrian areas;
deliver water to agricultural fields, gardens and for urban household use
(Darren Doherty said he saw and photographed some of these in North Africa).

cisterns in domed buildingsc with heat chimneys attached to buildings, used
for cooling and domestic water supply

the pre-Inca canals on contour for water collection and channeling,
delivery to impoundments or direct use
