Hmm, in our climate compost makes itself. Only thing is to prevent it getting too wet.
One definition of a fertile soil that I read once was that when you put a straw bale on the ground it should have completely decomposed in six months, only leaving the twines behind on the surface.

Absolutely right. Making good biochar is almost as hard as making good compost!
