They are heroes. I don't think they did much timber framing though.

I assume you sre familiar with Helen and Scott Nearing's books.
He describes his home building adventures on his New England homestead
utilizing a varieties of techniques, possibly some post and beam work
and his slipform masonry method of building free standing stone walls.
