I saw a short (very short) video clip of a ground level collection system,
under the eaves, at www.AsiAsi.TV.   Under the section for the earthbag
building project they showed ground level gutter collection that fed into a
cistern.  That is all I know about it but it looked like it would work.

One of the things I was thinking of is what if you created drainage
trenches on the ground at the dripline & harvested the water there
rather than at the eave level.  I could do something really simple
like making a trench & lining it with 8 mil plastic.  The trench would
have to be graded so that it moves the water away from the barn.

According to calculations based on the following equation

A = (catchment area of building)

R = (inches of rain)

G = (total amount of collected rainwater)

(A) x (R) x (600 gallons) / 1000 = (G)

My barn should generate over 50,000 gallons of rainwater or 1800
gallons for a 1" rainfall.

Isabel,
We are moving to Macon (from cold, dry eastern Washington) late March, so
I'll miss this PDC in Americus, but would love to meet up and check out what
you're doing at Udan Farm.  We'll be digging up our young orchard and moving
it, a chicken tractor, and a few barrels of finished compost with us!  And I
could probably use some pointers on permaculture in a hot humid climate.

Any other economically-displaced contributors to this list, just a heads-up:
There are many VERY CHEAP properties for sale in the Macon, GA area.  We just
made an offer on a 1940s crackerbox with 0.4 acres of soon-to-be food forest
for full price at $7600.  And there are cheaper ones listed.

Any other permies out there in middle Georgia?  I know there is an Atlanta
contingent, Lee Flier et al, but I'm looking forward to hooking up with
anyone south of there to Tifton or so in particular...

Email on or off-list.

All my best,
Tripp

Hi, I hope this is not OT.

I need to build a barn this summer and am wondering if strawbale would
be a reasonable thing to try in northern NY.

Does anyone know of any strawbale barns in NY or Ontario?

Does anyone know of any sources of strawbales in NY, VT or Ontario?

Thanks..
