Hey Everyone,

I just got this update from Cory who is currently in Florida (I think Little
Haiti) and is getting news from groups on the ground. I myself am currently
hoping, and waiting, for phone call from the following folks:

I'm in touch with some rescue teams on the ground in Port Au Prince, Haiti
and per them, the thing that is the biggest situation is the water. Their
wells, generators and filtration systems have blown out so their water
supply is compromised. So anybody who has specific knowledge about how to
filter, capture, create safe drinking water would be very helpful right now.
The Red Cross and other organizations are bringing in emergency food,
toiletries, etc.

Compost toilets and sanitation would be another area since the water is
compromised.

This on-the-ground group are volunteer ministers. They are sending a plane
of 100 volunteers down in a few days and have a plane load in Port Au
Prince. They work directly with the Red Cross and other key players and can
hook permaculturists up with key disaster personnel. That can be important
in getting needed resources fast, etc. The person I spoke with instantly
understood the importance of sustainable design in a disaster setting and
was totally behind getting permaculture into use, not just in Haiti but in
other areas as well where they are still working, trying to rehabilitate
areas.

It is possible that people with experience and expertise in the above areas
could get a ride on the plane, leaving from Los Angeles, that will be taking
these volunteers down. They are trying to fill the plane with their own
volunteers, but will make room for experts in the above areas.

Port Au Prince is not safe right now, there are escaped convicts, gangs,
looters ranging in the city. The rescue worker areas are protected by UN
personnel and are fairly safe. They are still working on getting information
from the countryside - we know that many roads are blocked or impassable -
most of the rescue effort is focused in Port Au Prince because that is the
place where most people have been impacted. I will have on the ground
updates pretty much daily at this point, and am seeking out other sources of
info as well from contacts in Little Haiti.

Here's a list of things needed most:

VOLUNTEERS WITH THE FOLLOWING SKILLS OR DISASTER AREA EXPERIENCE:

- Search and Rescue experience
- Medical doctors, EMTs and nurses
- Anybody with skills in setting up communication lines
- Coordination skills
- Crowd control skills

MATERIALS THAT ARE MOST URGENTLY NEEDED:

- Water (especially water sanitation equipment/materials)
- Medical supplies
- Generators for wells
- Non-perishable food supplies
- Other commodities such blankets, tents, sanitation materials (e.g. soap,
toilette paper, Diapers, shampoo)
