The discussion about copyright and intellectual property has been very
important to me because of my experiences with West Coast Food Forestry.  I
nearly published this book with Chelsea Green, but the large number of photos
and regional aspect of the book were considered to be economic limitations,
therefore I have merely offered the book on disc.  My biggest desire was to
get the information out to people who would use it, but I also wanted some
money back for all the work I put into it, and needed the money to buy land
to create a demonstration site.  My copyright policy was based on trust, as
digital information is easily duplicated.  I ask for $10 a copy and
appropriate donations for business use of excerpts.  I knew that poorer
people might not be able to honor this request, and that was fine with me.

However, people started to upload my book onto the Internet for free
download, without my permission.  This made me angry as I had not been asked,
but I have decided not to remove these from the Internet because I am too
busy to create my own download site, and I am happy that the book is getting
a wider distribution.  I have also been amazed at the number of people who do
send me money, though this is only a small fraction of those who are
downloading my book.  Given the lack of effort on my part to market the book,
I would say that my measly income from the book has remained relatively
stable, though this could change in the future.

On the other hand, I do have to say that I now have less incentive to keep
updating and expanding the book.  For one thing, it would be a real task to
limit the Internet version to the most recent one.  I feel there are other
things I can do with my time that will have greater yields.  Private property
ensures private profits, so there is a greater incentive to create private
property than public property.  The public property I have created is giving
me some rewards, but not as useful a reward as a reliable stream of money.
Hopefully, the planet will be rewarded with more food forests!

<- Look at all the folks (myself included) who posted links to the
Permaculture manual. The fact is no matter how many times you ask for
electronic version of the book to be taken down someone else is going to post
it elsewhere. It's a push down pop up scenario. Anyhow, it’s time that an
updated edition of the manual be written & published.

<- 29 minutes in Cory Doctorow purports  “ebooks act as an enticement
instead of a replacement to
consuming the product of our work”. I think he’s right on. Ebook are more
apt
to function as free advertisement for your book than lower your sales.

http://www.futurescenarios.org/
<- There’s a printable version of this book on the website. It’s also
subdivided into sections easily readable on the web, good design.

<- The Swedish pirate party has a very compelling political platform
centered around a radical restructuring patent laws. Their applying the logic
of creativecommons/copyleft to pharmaceuticals is future (look a Brazil).

<- Frank Aragona is an active advocate for paring permaculture with
alternative copyrights. Listen to his podcasts. It’s the closest thing most
of
us have permaculture talk radio!
