Hello Lisa in Ashland,

Can you separate the youngest does instead? I kept goats for a short while -we kept the buck separate -he didn't seem to mind... Are you sure yours is "lonely?"

Not sure that just because Mollison acts like he doesn't like goats -that he doesn't -or that permaculture designers would exclude their use (?!?) -they shouldn't... but they should be careful!

Whats wrong with goats? just wondering.

Goats, when not managed properly, can be quite destructive on most landscapes -especially in ecosystems that didn't co-evolve with a mostly non-discriminate and voracious browser...

Fortunately, goats can sometimes be properly managed...

FYI -there is a company that works our town -that has several hundred Rental-Goats for roadside and broad scale weed/fire abatement. Works very well... http://www.californiagrazing.com/

Wish I had some goats yesterday... I just mowed a quarter acre of 6 foot tall mustard, radish and thistle!

Good luck Lisa,

I doubt this list contains many goat herders, what with Mollison
being kind of anti-goat, but just in case: we separate the buck as
everyone does. We have a new buck and he's lonely. It would be
nice to have a more natural herd with the buck living with the does,
but how would one avoid having very young does bred? Anyone here
raise goats permaculturally?
