Larry asked for resources on:
"If anyone has anything to add on compost, EM, IM, fermented
plant extracts and 24 hour compost tea, that be much appreciated.."
There is no faster way to share resources on this than to just
list the SANET, BD-Now, and Compost postings where I
have summarized these already, in addition to the ATTRA
publications on CT and BD.
Somebody needed these last week, so I put the
following list together. See resources below on BD,
CT, EM, IM, and FPE.
Especially see the long SANET post on November 6,
2002 regarding Fermented Plant Extracts and EM-FPE.
Fermented plant extracts -- most commonly done as
a plain liquid manure or plant extract -- though the use
of EM to make EM-FPE is growing -- is a dynamic
practice gaining increased usage in India, Africa, Asia,
and Central America where poor farmers need to obtain
fertility and pest control from local plants and simple
on-farm extraction methods. See the SANET posting
for links to the really interesting and detailed work
underway in India.
EM (Effective Microorganisms) from the Kyusei Nature
Farming system in Japan.
EM-FPE, the EM-Fermented Plant Extracts.
IM (Indigenous Microorganisms), or IMO's, from the Korean
Natural Farming Association.
In January 2003, Gil Carandang and myself put on an IMO
workshop at the EcoFarm Conference in Asilomar, California.
Making these IMO cultures on the farm is one of the most
exciting developments I've seen in organic farming. See
the SANET posting of January 19, 2003 for background
resources.
The book by Han Kyu Cho and Atsushi Koyama, "Korean
Natural Farming: Indigenous Microorganisms and Vital
Power of Crop/Livestock," is the primary source in English.
Yet, the book is not easy to obtain. Gil Carandang is offering
his little booklet from the workshop, which is a photocopy of
his practical notes on making these IMO cultures as well as
illustrations from Han Kyu Cho's book. If you can get to
one of Gil's workshop, you will have fun and learn a lot.
The Korean Natural Farming approach with IMO's add a
whole new dimension to your farming experience.
The solutions that result from CT, EM, IM and FPE can be
viewed as "special cultures" that contain beneficial microbes,
nutrients, and bioactive substances.
BD (biodynamics) has "special cultures" in the form of
CPP (Cow pat pit) or Barrell Compost (BC); Horn Manure
(BD 500), BD Preps, etc.
CT, EM, IM, FPE and BD "special cultures" are cutting edge
organic farming techniques in terms of fertility, biostimulation,
growth promotion, and biocontrol of pests and diseases. Most
notably, these special cultures can be viewed as biocontrol
techniques in the rhizosphere and phyllosophere.
CT, EM, IM, FPE and BD are some of the advanced
organic farming approches that are being employed
to combat insect pests and diseases. They offer
complex biological, chemical, physical, and energetic
interactions to manipulate plant physiology,
pests, and pest habitats.

Steve Diver
