Ash,
you may want to search for "paleorefugia" to find your oldest
forests - these are rare and unique biological sites ("biologically
ancient populations") of rare plant, fungi, etc. species found scattered
around the world, including in the USA (I worked in north Florida along
the Apalachicola River), China, etc. which I know about...
