Hi Walker Percy fans,
Though I’ve not responded myself, I’ve been following the listserv Moviegoer discussion and everyone’s insights and observations with interest and enjoyment!
In fact, I saw a lot of potential for some great papers in your comments and contributions, so I thought I’d send out another reminder of our Walker Percy session(s) at the November 2024 SAMLA conference: (https://southatlanticmla.org/ ).
Does anyone feel inspired to develop their insights into a paper to present at the conference? The Call for Papers is below for more information; the weblink above also provides more information.
Your paper (20 minute presentation, or ten double-spaced pages typed) can be on ANY topic related to Percy; it does not have to be on the conference theme of “Seen and Unseen” though it can certainly be so if you feel so inclined. You also don’t have to be a university professor — independent scholars (which I think we all are) are more than welcome and have presented at SAMLA many times in the past.
If you’d like to join us, then send a 200-300 word abstract summary to me personally at kperkin1 AT scsu.edu and kareyperkins AT gmail.com. I did sent out the CFP this spring; now we’re getting close to the conference date, so if you could get something to me by the end of this week for submission by the deadline, that’d be great!
Feel free to email me with any more questions about it!
All the best,
Karey

CALL FOR PAPERS on WALKER PERCYSOUTH ATLANTIC MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION:SAMLA 96: Seen and UnseenFriday, November 15 to Sunday, November 17, 2024Hyatt Regency Jacksonville RiverfrontJacksonville, FLPapers for this traditional session may focus on any aspect of Walker Percy’s life and works, either fiction or non-fiction. Especially welcome are topics relevant to the SAMLA 96 conference theme: Seen and Unseen.Papers for this traditional session may focus on any aspect of Walker Percy’s life and works, either fiction or non-fiction. Especially welcome are topics relevant to the SAMLA 96 conference theme: Seen and Unseen.Walker Percy’s writings focus on searches, clues, mysteries, and theories. He was, above all else, a true interdisciplinary thinker whose broad interests were marshaled in service of his worldview. Areas for consideration might include such topics as:How do these unseen forces inform his works? In what ways do his characters function as searchers or seekers of the unseen? As detectives attempting to solve mysteries? As theorists testing out ideas? Papers explore the underpinnings of Percy’s fiction and nonfiction, particularly those that have been under-explored in the past: How did various fields, such as medicine and psychology, philosophy and anthropology combine in Percy’s works? In what way did he serve as a culture critic of his time? Of the American soul? How did he utilize Henry Veatch or Raymond Chandler, Jakob von Uexküll, Bronislaw Malinowski, or other heretofore unexamined influences in his theories and novels? What might you add to the exploration of his works? Please send 200-300-word abstracts on these topics or ANY aspect of Percy’s fiction or non-fiction (not just limited to conference theme) to Dr. Karey Perkins, South Carolina State University, to both kperkin1 AT scsu.edu and kareyperkins AT gmail.com . Please also include a brief bio and any A/V requirements in your abstract.KareyKarey Perkins, M.A., M.A.T., Ph.D.
