That’s what we do – break up with disks,
middle buster, whatever, then rototill to prep for plastic mulch or seedbed.
Thanks for all the great info. Keep it coming. The story has shifted some.
After the initial “I think the axle is broken and I’M NOT GOING TO MESS WITH
THAT”, I got out the parts photos and he saw how little the axle was and opened
on up. Yes, it is broken (he got tired of replacing shear pins and kept
putting stronger and stronger bolts in). If we can get the axle, seals, and gaskets
(old 1970s Kubota), which a dealer is looking into, it should be a simple repair.
We could definitely use a heavier duty, newer tiller, but if this one will last
a while longer, higher priorities are flail mower and a set of chisels, and a
hiller. Beth Spaugh http://rhomestead.com

[mailto:market-farming-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of sunnfarm AT netscape.com All the tillers I see on the market
today under $2000 are really light duty. Dont expect too much from them. Figure
10 horsepower per foot. Look for all gear drive and slip clutch is a must.
Light duty tillers work great after you deep plow the soil first and use the
tiller to soften the ground for bedding... Bob. Old
tiller just really broke. Yes, the current thinking is to not disturb
fungal mats, but reality is in our soil and with our stage of weed control, we
sometimes need a tiller. We have moved to a lot of raised beds and the bed
shaper needs fairly well disturbed soil to fill well. I will be looking
to move up a 6 foot one (42” was wonderful for our beds, but the wider ones go
deeper and I’d like that when I do use it). I’d
appreciate suggestions of what to avoid and what has been reliable. Thank
you. Beth
