One food hub I know of in the DC-area is through the Arcadia Center
I don't know if this is up and running or is in the proposal stage. Unfortunately, not only is it for wholesale prices but somewhere I saw that producers won't be cutting to order but will be supplying large orders that may not sell at the quoted price so there is a provision for offering a lower price to the producer for the remainder so it can be used in food banks and soup kitchens. A restaurant group backs the Arcadia Center.
I heard a couple of recent interviews with Joel Salatin in which he mentioned that farmers markets are dead and virtual markets are replacing them and there are a host of benefits to both sides (strange that Joel would disregard the social benefits of farmers markets, how great it is for consumers to meet farmers and farmers to meet the people who will eat their food) He said that polyface is in 3 virtual markets and they are doing very well.
I haven't been able to locate a single one of the markets Polyface is in. Does anyone know of any of them?
I'm at a loss on how you drum up business for a local virtual market.
Also, I most of the virtual markets I've looked at on-line charge a membership fee of around $50. This astonishes me. I've been providing CSA farming for over a dozen years and I really don't think I've ever met a shareholder who would be willing to pay $50 to have the right to buy food from me. This works for you?
Thanks
