Carla

I number of years ago I had a problem with muskmelons that was somewhat
similar. I was really puzzled about it. After doing some research on the
problem I learned of a new problem discovered by USDA researchers at OSU. It
involved a mycoplasma that was spread by leafhoppers. It must have been 15
years ago and I don't remember it very well. But I know they released a fact
sheet on it. I knew I had the same problem because it was identical in
symptoms and I had been fighting leafhoppers on the melons, which is unusual
here. Leafhoppers can get caught up in storms and carried for hundreds of
miles before dropping out. We often get storms that move up from your area
of the country.

Anyway, perhaps there is someone in Plant Path there who you could talk to
and see if it might be involved. Melons and squash are related, even if
distant relatives.

Forgot to mention that hubby is a professor at OSU, in the Horticulture
dept. He doesn't think it is bacterial wilt, but he's not a plant
pathologist either. He's Post-harvest Physiology.
