Allan

I teach kids gardening and am trying to document my year for me and them and anyone else that might enjoy it. I walk around with a little Cannon camera with a movie function and grab what might be good.

The fork, which i love, is called Radius Gardens. I bought it at Soil Service in Kansas City but i'm sure there is a website.

I got the 90#, 48 inch wide, 435 feet long roll of Kraft paper for $55 at Berlau Paper here in Kansas City.

Hope this helps

Nice show, Marty! How cool to reply in video!! Thanks! (What kind of
fork is that you are using??)
This begs the new question, though: "How do you afford to use kraft
paper on your carrot beds?" Seriously. I just bought a roll for
covering picnic tables to paint some bird houses on it I still have
sticker shock! I wonder how newsprint ends would work? Thanks -Allan

Here is how i have had luck having carrots germinate.

Where are you folks finding affordable and/or long rolls of burplap?
I picked some up at HomeDepot the other day, could only get 20ft roll
and I think I paid $12 a roll for it. Sadly, I didn't get any of it
down before our gully washer came in last Sunday (5 inches of rain
and hale in a few hours!) Strangely, radishes came up in beds after
the wash, not sure the carrot seed is still in the beds, though

I think I got a tip from someone on this list (or maybe the high
tunnel) who covers his carrot bed with burlap. Helps to hold
moisture on the bed and carrots can germinate up through the burlap.
He also said that early weeds would come up through the cloth and
then when you roll it off the bed the weeds come with. I hastened to
try it, got a 3'x50' roll. It did help with quicker more even
germination in that bed, but when I rolled it up the bed was full of
chickweed, which was hiding pretty well under the cloth, so no real
benefit against early weeds. I planned to try it again in a
different spot but forgot and planted rows of radish in between the
carrots.

I need help to improve my carrot germination. I have been trying
to keep them moist and with all the wind, that is really hard. I
wet down the bed in the morning and in the evening. I am at school
so a mid day sprinkling is out of the question. One of the beds in
my tunnel that is planted with carrots came up terrible. In a 3
foot by 30 foot bed, I bet there are 100-150 carrots that
germinated. They were planted on March 27th. The seed was new and
they were planted with an Earthway planter with a heavy carrot
plate, maybe a light carrot plate, my helpers don't remember. The
seed was raw and pelleted. Could they still come up if I continue
to keep it moist?

My carrots outside are doing about the same. What tips or tricks
do you have to get them to come up?

Thanks,
Jay
