We have all 3 sizes of the Hatfield transplanter. They do work much better in
fluffy ground, but it's not hard to sort of scuff dirt around the transplants
when the soil is less than perfect. My husband "runs" the Hatfield, and I
carry and drop plants in. I scuff dirt around the plants that aren't
completely covered as we go down the row. You develop a rhythm as you go so
that you can cover with your foot without slowing down.
The only problem we've noticed is when the plants get a little too big and
then the leaves will sort of hang up in the tube. A tap on the ground usually
gets things moving again though.
