At this place those dry standing dead elms would be first class firewood if the equipment to cut and split would stand the greif, that stuff is the hardest cutting wood around and the grain is like a knitted sock, will double up and break the sturdiest of hydraulic spliters.
We lost 99% of the elm here in the 70's, most of it got burned as firewood by the stubornist folk who cut it all 4 ways with chainsaws. Once in the stove it burned with a blue flame and acted like a coal fire.
