Good to see you got your heated bench running... I used to cover benches with
1x2 fencing 14 gauge
but now I found something much better longer lasting easier to install and
a lot cheaper. Its galvanised wire plaster lathe. Its the material used to
hold plaster to the walls in homes. It comes in 28"x96" sheets
and needs a frame of 2x3x96" non treated lumber on 12" centers... Bob.

I'm facing this decision right now too. Hardware cloth would definitely
work but is a bit pricey. I've also looked at larger dimension mesh. Our
local ranch store sells 100's rolls of heavier gauge 1/2"x1 mesh, but it's
even more expensive than the hardware cloth by the foot. Farmtek has better
prices on larger meshes, but the shipping is prohibitive.

I'm thinking I might use rough cut boards or 1x2's to build table tops
(leaving a gap between the boards for drainage) and just set them atop
sawhorses. Overall, cheaper I think, and easier to move out of the way when
I don't need them all set up.

Btw, I got my germ table up and running with a 140' heavy duty gro-quick
soil warming cable, plus a pro-gro thermostat. It covers two attached
tables (42"x14') Wired the heating cable to hardware cloth, set that on top
of insulation board and covered it all with about an inch of garden soil
(hoping the moist soil would help hold and distribute the heat evenly). It
seems to be working fine.
