I quit poultry 10 years ago. I sold brown eggs for $1 a dozen which was
breakeven cost even with my own feed custom milled locally. I think today my
cost per dozen would be around $1.50. I could not get more than $2 at best
despite the usual small farm local grown hype. The wholesale price of large
brown eggs delivered to northeast markets today is 68 cents a dozen. that is
as low as it was 30 years ago!. The truth is that small farms cannot sell
eggs in the real world without pricing themselves out of the market. If you
can sell high priced eggs God bless you. But small farms selling eggs or
anything else for that matter can never be sucessful until we figure a way to
market profitably to the least among us. I
