Hello folks,
Here in California, we have a law about certified farmers markets. In
exchange for not having to conform to the federal standard size, pack, and
packaging regulations, farmers can be certified by their local ag
commissioner to sell at a market also certified by the local ag
commissioner. Certification involves the farmer filling out an extensive
form (see Market Farm Forms) that details each vegetable variety, how much
you have planted and when it is expected to be in the market. The ag
commissioner then comes out to inspect your farm to see if you are actually
growing what you said you were and in the quantity you said you were.
Reselling is not only forbidden, but, if you are caught doing it, you can
be banned from the markets and fined. Only agricultural products may be
sold in certified farmers markets. If other things, i.e. crafts or
prepared foods, are going to be sold, the "certified market" must be
delineated by signs or ropes as separate from the rest of the market.
