I trialed Corn Gluten meal in unheated high tunnel production of early
tomatoes in 1995. It had good control of germinating weeds in areas that
had a moist/dry out cycle. Where the soil stayed either dry or moist, it
had a much lesser effect. It also had an effectiveness limit of about 6
weeks. Although I think it is a very effective way to handle germinating
weed seeds, as an organic grower, I cannot justify using it with the amount
of corn that is deliberately GMO corn in this country, as well as the amount
of corn that wasn't meant to be but is contaminated. Too bad - it had real
promise as an effective, environmentally safe tool for helping with weed
control (and acting as a nutrition supplement for the crop as well).
