But do you or do you not feel that the Office itself is due respect,
regardless of the person holding the office? I feel that is does.

There are two different meaning of 'respect'; one is deference to someone
because they have certain rights or privileges, and the other is holding
someone in esteem because of personal qualities or abilities. You can show
respect for someone's position without respecting the person.

On this list we often resort to name calling when we refer to our
Presidents. I don't consider that deference. IMO, sometimes, as in the
case with the POTUS, I believe deference should override.

I agree completely. I often stop reading a post once the name-calling starts. I don't like name-calling and insults in general, aimed at anyone. It's rude and reflects more on the person doing the insulting that the one insulted.

I agree, and to my recollection, you personally have not been too
offensive, if at all-I can't think of a time when you namecalled or
labeled, but in the past, some on the list have been disrespectful, in
all of it's meanings, on the list, both to listmembers and to the
titles, myself included. Not a day goes by that I don't think of >the 'labeling' incident. I just think that if we all agreed to try to >be more respectful, we would be able to discuss more on this >list without creating WWIII.

I don't remember the 'labeling' incident...I may have stopped reading when it got nasty. But we DO all label, using our own standards and definitions...in starting this thread, you wrote that your are "more patriotic" than most of us. I think we all have different ideas of what it means to be patriotic, and some (not me) may take offense that you think you are more patriotic than they are just because they show it differently. To some, opposing our leadership with open rebellion could be a very patriotic thing; to others, it's "my country right or wrong".

I can be offensive, but it's without name-calling or insulting...people (me included) do and say enough dumb things---just pointing out their errors can be offensive enough without resorting to name-calling :-) Everytime I read something disrespectful on the list, I think of the old Saturday Night Live News debates that started out "Jane, you ignorant slut...". Makes me smile. You can't take people too seriously, especially anonymous people on an email list (even if we have known some of them for 10-15 years).
