It would be awesome if I could have a veggie stand, although I don't think it
would do well in this area due to very low income levels and high
unemployment. There is an organic farm that sells to the public about 2
miles east of me on the main road although I've never seen anyone there.
There's a "big agri-farm stand" run north of town that always has at least
one car parked in the drive when I go by. Plus the flea market, but most of
that looks pretty awful....
In Miami,,,,,,, there are a number of folks who either buy or grow veggies,
and either put them in the back of their pick up truck and sell by the
roadside on really busy roads where there is enough room to pull off, OR they
put them into small plastic bags and yell out either "Un Peso" or "One
Dollar" and walk up and down between the cars during the rush hour drive
home. They sell a lot that way. Everything from coconuts to tomatoes to
limes, all kinds of tropical fruits. I've impulse bought from those guys
many times, since I they walk right up to the car windows and I didn't have
to get out of my car.... ! LOL

The regular ones can get 15-20 pounds. That's too much squash for most
people (I sell squash and most people don't want the big ones), but I love
squash. I'm growing the the big ones, but also the 'baby' hubbards that
stay under 10 pounds. You can get the 'babies' in almost any Hubbard
variety. I'm growing the golden, green, and blue. You can eat squash young,
but to have them keep over the winter, in the Northeast we wait until after
the first frost. They are 'ripe' when you can't easily scratch the skin with
your fingernail.

I've never had them rot, but I've rarely had this much water. I have clay
soil, and it hold the water like crazy. I've amended my beds, and they drain
pretty well, but still, between the clay and all the organic matter, they
are pretty wet. The potato plants are about 4' above ground level, but the
branches have fallen over several times, and I hilled them. They also were
started about 6" down in a trench.
>Celery likes a lot of water? Maybe that is why mine >died........... :-)
Celery is a bog plant. My area used to be the celery capital of the
Northeast. Says something about my area...
>My garlic was fairly small, but tastes great. If yours are big >maybe I
>need to water more.
I started harvesting the garlic this morning. They look great, but have huge
globs of mud sticking all over them. I have to carefully clean each bulb (I
don't want to wet them anymore, so I'm just scraping it off), then hang them
to dry in the barn, so it's going to take a long time to harvest (I have
300-400 bulbs). My bulbs are large, but I've been selecting for large bulbs
for about 5 years, so I've got a strain of garlic specific to my garden.
>What are you planning on doing with all the tomatoes?
I have a farm stand where I sell my pasture-raised beef and my veggies, and
tomatoes are always in demand. I sell out of tomatoes and garlic no matter
how much I raise.Theret should be an even bigger demand this year because a
lot of tomatoes have blight in this area. My plants are doing well and are
loaded with tomatoes. It seems to be an exceptional tomato year for me; no
blossom end rot, no strange, misshapen fruit, no blight. If only half the
fruit ripens properly, I'll be swimming in tomatoes.
I can a lot (mostly as spaghetti sauce), and I l ive on tomato sandwiches
for a couple of months. By the time frost gets the plants, I've had my
tomato 'fix' for a while. I also have some planted in the greenhouse, so
I'll have tomatoes until December.

Leslie; it sounds like you have a green thumb for curcubits!
I have a lot of melons in the greenhouse, climbing into the rafters, with
the melons hanging in little hammocks so they don't pull the vines down. My
squash are finally setting fruit, but it's less than 2 months till our first
frost. The Baby Hubbards will ripen by then, and there are a lot of them,
but I don't know if the larger squash will develop in time.
My peppers and eggplant gave up waiting for warm weather (it's still not
here; we rarely get out of the 70's), but everything else is doing amazingly
well, considering the cool weather, little sun, and lots of rain. I can't go
out without boots...no gardening in sneakers this year. I have standing
water everywhere because the ground is saturated and won't absorb any more.
The raised beds are still draining well, but the paths have a couple inches
of water.
Everything seems to be taking longer than usual, with the lack of sun, but
looks good. Potatoes are still blooming (the plants are the biggest I've
ever seen), and won't be ready to dig for probably a month. I'm growing
celery for the first time, and it LOVES this weather. Even the onions and
leeks are doing well (I didn't think they liked so much wet). The Big Beef
tomatoes are starting to ripen, with the Abe Lincolns right behind. The
tomato plants are huge and heavy, and starting to pull the stakes over; I
can't tie them up as fast as they are growing. The Rose and Mortgage Lifter
tomatoes are just setting fruit. Today I will harvest my garlic from the
mud (not the way it's supposed to be done...garlic is suposed to be dry
toward the end, but even with all the rain, it looks good).
The ground is so squishy, and it rains at least every other day, so I
haven't mowed the lawn in a couple of weeks. It looks like a jungle.

Subject: [Homestead] spaghetti squash
I bought a spaghetti squash for the first time earlier this year, dried a
few seeds, and planted one seed just to see if it would grow.
Grow it has. The one plant is now over 7 foot wide (I actually took a
measuring tape out this morning) and just over knee high and seems to be
expanding by the minute.... only slightly exaggerating... :-)
The thing that gets me is the first squash growing (of 5 so far) is starting
to look like a monster. It is just over 10" long and 6" (yes 6") wide !!! It
is green with some lighter green speckles.
The one I got in the grocery store (from which the seed came from) was
yellow (and I assume the ripe color), and was only about 7" long and maybe
4" wide.
This spaghetti plant was planted about 12 feet away from the monster
pumpkins and now they have grown into each other.
I sure hope there is no way that the bees can cross the monster pumpkin
pollen with the spaghetti squash and turn the spaghetti squash into monster
sized squash............
I planted this 1 squash, 3 pumpkins and 2 watermelon plants in the middle of
a driveway circle, not expecting them to grow that much, or even do well
since I didn't till the soil very deep and the sand underneath is very hard.
I keep having to turn the vines so they don't grow over the driveway. It is
a good thing the rabbits and ground squirrels ate the popcorn shoots and
sweet potato slips, because they would be overrun at this point by the
pumpkins.
Curcubits sure seem easy to grow here.......... but it is getting to the
point (almost) that every time I see a new baby watermelon, jenny lind melon
or honey dew I cringe... J/K, as it looks like I can freeze lots of that.
I harvested the first jenny lind the other day, much to my surprise it is
green fleshed inside.... but ooooh so good, and as juicy as the watermelon.
I haven't figured out when to harvest the honey dew, so I just took a chance
and picked a big one, and it was about 90% ripe, and also very juicy but
firm also.
I can't wait to see how big the spaghetti squash gets. I wish the hubbards
were producing better. 5 plants, and only 2 squash.

Hmmm, I think the pink skinned one grew the largest, but still not large out
of the 4 different varieties I bought. I'll hve to keep better notes next
year and try some different types. Even though the ones I grew are small, I
suspect I actually grew enough to last me a year, surprise....
Now if I could just get herbs to grow here............. I had my ex send me a
tropical one called Culantro (not to be confused with Cilantro). I'm growing
it indoors as it is a real shade lover, and loves high humidity... so I've
set the pot in a milk jug cut in half and keep water in the milk jug to try
to keep the humidity higher. Don't know if it is going to survive here, but
I sure hope so. The flavor of this one really adds to some of the recipes I
like to cook and I really miss it.

I started off growing 3 or 4 different types of garlic. A couple types did
best, so I picked the largest, nicest bulbs to plant for the next year, and
have done that every year. At first that left the less desirable ones for
me, but now they are all pretty nice. I fugure that the ones that do best
must be best adapted to my particular garden. The same is true of any kind
of seed saving, but it's a little trickier with seed because it's not an
exact duplicate of it's parent like garlic is.

Explain.... You've been selecting for large bulbs,,,, strain specific to
your garden.
How do you select? Keep buying different varieties until you find one that
likes your area? Or only picking off the large cloves to plant or what?

So true !!
Some doctors & hospitals will clamor that the reason you need to be forced to
participate in a health car plan is because some people don't get insurance
and then don't want to pay for their medical treatment (i.e. emergency rooms
can't turn patients away... allegedly).
Of course, they forget that it was the government who forced that situation
also.
I have jokingly thought of tatooing my chest with the following warning:
"Warning, if I am unconscious, you do not have my permission to administer
any health care services including medical transportation services without my
express signed consent in advance. If you choose to do so anyway, be advised
that I refuse to pay. Any attempts to collect for services will result in me
baring my chest in a court of law to prove that you violated my wishes." LOL
