Tires are still coming up good. The big patch in the ground, nothing above
ground up yet.... however, I moved some soil a bit, and have found some stuff
coming up underground, so expect they will start to peek their tops out in a
week or so. It's been cold here again.
Having a lot of trouble getting most seeds to sprout. They either haven't
sprouted at all or start with the seed leaves, and then nothing.
After seeing the post on the Monsanto 1 season engineered seeds, I'm
beginnning to worry also. I've started seeds twice now, no results.
I did get a lot of free beans from the bean straw - and those are coming up
fine.
And no delivery yet on the seed potatoes ordered.
I don't claim to have a green thumb, but NEVER in all the times that I have
started seeds before have I ever had any trouble at least getting plants to
be 4" high or so before I forget to water, or a hurricane or some other
reasonable explanation......
Some are being started inside, some out, even trying different soils etc.
I would hate to have to resort to buying starter plants my first year, but it
might come to that....

peek their tops out in a week or so. It's been cold here again.
Having a lot of trouble getting most seeds to sprout. They either haven't
sprouted at all or start with the seed leaves, and then nothing and die off.
Even though I'm keeping humid/moist etc. monitoring temps.
After seeing the post on the Monsanto 1 season engineered seeds, I'm

I did get a lot of free beans from the bean straw - and those are coming up

sets)
And no delivery yet on the seed potatoes ordered... even though it was
promised a couple weeks ago.
I don't claim to have a green thumb, but NEVER in all the times that I have

plants to be 4" high or so before I forget to water, or a hurricane or some
other reasonable explanation for me killing a plant......
Some are being started inside, some out, even trying different soils etc.
I would hate to have to resort to buying starter plants my first year, but it
might come to that....

Off topic to homesteading
My dad's life insurance agent was out last week, and returned this week w/ a
second older fellow (from AZ). I was there on dad's request to make sure no
problems going on, which is irrelevant.
Anyway, learned something interesting. The older guy, now retired, and
mentoring the newer guys from time to time, is one of the former managing
partners of the insurance firm. Wound up in a bit of a discussion with him.
He stated that insurance firm is gearing up for a hyperinflation.... and the
company is in the process of shifting their investment strategy.

I'm trying to catch up - every time I've started reading emails for weeks
now.......an interruption.
Someone wrote: "That seems to be happening to too many people these days. I

I've heard recently there is a virus going around and in particular is
affecting people w/yahoo addresses. It attacked a site that I'm a paid
subscriber of. The cure is to make sure the senders' address is in your
contacts list.

That seems to be happening to too many people these days. I wonder why
ISP's can't recognize that an email list is not spam.

You and Susan Jane need to talk and compare stories! She's also
recuperating from a lot of surgery-knee replacement and such. Wow, I
can't even imagine the pain you must have had with all of that. I am
glad you are a free woman again as I totally understand the feeling of
having to rely on someone else for simple things like hair washing. My
rotator cuff injury crops up from time to time. That's what you get
when a ram charges you and you extend your left arm to try and stop
him.<G> Lately, my right shoulder has also been hurting a bit, but I
can still raise my arm, so it is not bad. I have no clue as to what I
did to it.

There have been a lot of folks that have just dropped away over the
years. The archives only go back so far, and my memory is not getting
any better.
In my mind, the one thing that sets this list apart from other homestead
lists is that it is less about teaching and more for those of us with
the mindset to discuss our lives and how life impacts what we want to
do. It is still about homesteading, just with the emphasis that it is a
community for homesteaders. It truly is a community. Knowing that
people I care about are here makes me want to stay here. Without ties,
we move on.
Life does throw curves and we have to figure out how to continue to do
what we love to do. I'm really glad to know that you are okay and
itching to get back to your farm, and if you don't get back soon, the
Bermuda grass will indeed cover it up!

Don't know what your specific problem is..... but to increase oxygen in a
pond.........
Some of aquaculture farms use paddle wheels that are powered and move back
and forth across the ponds to stir up the water which stirs in O2.
Others build a little mountain of rocks in the center, run a pipe up the
middle and splatter water down over the rocks to achieve the same thing.
Other use the same concept but build a wooden float thing, kind of Central
America pyramid shaped that the water splashes down over.
Splashing water is the idea.
Adding crawdads??? might help keep the vegetation level down.

I've mentioned before we live on a three acre pond. Today I see
approximately a hundred dead bluegills, mostly around three inches and
smaller floating around the edges of the pond. They don't appear
malnourished though they probably bloated somewhat to cause them to
float.
We've been in an extended drought which caused the shallow banks to
recede maybe 10 ft in places, and good stands of grasses and weeds
sprouted on that exposed ground. Now that we've had a lot of rain the
pond has been full for about a month and that grass is decomposing. I
suspect this decomposition has depleted the oxygen supply in the water
rapidly and that's causing the fish kill.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I don't know where time is slipping to these days.......

Partly I've met some locals thru free-cycle and that has been interesting.
They are all about 15-20 years older, but at least interesting.

Mydaughter has beenout of work for months, and calling me quite a bit,
which put me really behind because she talks for hours and hours at a time.

Then my satellite forthe internet was down for over a week, further messing
things up for me. But that gave me a great opportunity to get out and build
a fence around one of the gardens - fortunately the weather was perfect.
That's the one that has potatoes planted.

I have another larger garden to fence to keep rabbits out - but the very day
I started to drag the poles over there - the wind started, and the temps
dropped. Today we've been at 45 mph pretty much sustained the whole day, and
even thought the temp during the day wasn't too bad - the wind chill makes it
too cold to work outside.

And then there have been the 200 mile round trips getting supplies, which
just kills a whole day.

I did finally find a feed store 100 miles from here that has two
differentrabbit breeders that supply bothCalifornians &
Australians.......... Theybring some in every week, so I left my card and
will be building rabbit cages as soon as the wind and temp is better for my
hands.
I'm thinking 1 male 3 females should be a good start. I'm hoping they can do
well on locally grown alfalfa, fresh grass and some of the kitchen scraps
like carrot peelings...

Built the poles for the pole beans which will double as providing me shade on
the east side of my east windows to keep the inside tempscooler for at least
an hour or so longer in the summer scorcher time. The yucca cactus are a
real blessing for that as they supply perfect poles for so many uses. I've
been able to stretch out my metal fencing posts much further by using yucca
branches inbetween as supports for the wire fencing... something that I
noticed other locals doing.

I had to repair a lot of irrigation lines, and did a lot of work in the
mini-pecan grove too.

We had a lot of some unusual weed bloom last year, and I've spent countless
hours raking and making firebreaks from the surrounding properties, as
spontaneous fires can be a problem. Glad I purchased an .mp3 player as it
makes the time go by fast doing those kinds of chores... And I'm sure glad
there are no neighbors close, because while doing those chores sometimes it
is fun to dance to the music ---- and an onlooker might think I'd gone off my
rocker...........

I discovered that as long as I keep moving, I can now stand on my bad knee
(the one that needs a partial knee replacement) for up to 6 hours,,,, but if
I stand still for more than 10 mins, I'm out of commission for a day or so
(pain/swelling etc).

One thing I had success with, seed wise,,,, is onthe 2nd attempt to sprout
the tomatoes, I started them indoors. Way too many seeds sprouted, so I
gently pulled up the extras, and transplanted them into the first set of
starter cups that failed.... and the news ones nearly all survived. :-) Of
course now I have too many......... but I'd rather have too many at this
point.

I built 2 flower gardens for mom - who for some reason lately can't hardly
get around and I'm taking her to the doc tomorrow. Why is it that I had a
200% success rate on starting flower for her from seed.......... and so many
of the veggies didn't do anything?????

Failures: broccoli, califlower, green, red, yellow purple jalapeno pimento
habanero peppers........(supposedly easy...), celery and on and on.

I do have tomatoes, one jalpeno (at the seed leaf stage), and maybe some
cilantro, and a few sunflowers.

Will start again.... as I'm determined to figure it out.

Hope all have been well.

(Just had to break the silence after learning that it is going down to
27(which means 24 or so for me) Sunday night and then 31 (28) on Monday
night. I am so frustrated!!!! Why can't Spring come and STAY?
And of course, it is raining AGAIN.
And there is a 50% chance of rain on both Sunday and Monday, AGAIN
My garden is flooded under an inch of water STILL because new springs
keep popping up-thank God for raised beds, but I want to plant corn and
beans! My peas are under water, and since they can't swim, I'm assuming
they have drowned...they look a bit pea-ked<g>.
The creek ran from Wednesday to Sunday, the longest time ever,
disappeared on Tuesday afternoon, started up yesterday afternoon and it
running full bore right now. I'm starting to get used to the creek running.
