Don't think that would work for me. With out making a very long story out of
why......here goes. When I prepare my ground and get it so that it will grow
things, it only lasts for about 3 years and then the very near by trees in
the woods send out feeder roots and fill my areas so that nothing grows. It
has taken me several years to figure this out. My permanent retaining
wall/compost bin was my first clue. It took and 18 year old with a strong
back to pick axe and shovel out the compost. As he brought each load I would
pull out the roots, which looked like small tumbleweed. Now I am going to
growing in containers and hope to keep the tree roots at bay that way.
It is a good thing that I love this property as it sure is a challenge to
produce my own food!

Jeanne, from what you have written my vision of your place is a pretty
steep hillside. Could you dig into the hill for the planting and have
a simple pole frame that could be covered with a tarp in the winter?
Bury the tree with leaves, etc., and cover the whole with something
that can be tied down so windproof. If the dig into the hill is only
large enough for the tree it should gain from earth temperature if so
covered. A plant in a glass-covered small area has the danger of
overheating in the sun unless it is well attended.
